When I want my Surface to output video and audio to my AVR (and thus to my TV and speakers), all I have to do is plug the adapter into my Surface's Mini DisplayPort jack. I also have a Surface Mini DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 Adapter connected to an HDMI cable that is connected to my Onkyo TX-NR787 AVR.

I don't know what version of Mini DisplayPort it has, but it must be MDP 1.2 or higher because my Surface supports 4K output via MDP.

I have a 2017 Surface Pro running Windows 10 Pro, version 1903, up to date with Windows updates, and not on the Insider program.
